Abbott

Abbott

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Originally up for grabs as “grain fed lambs” for a Thanksgiving meal, Abbott and his brother Costailo were saved and brought to sanctuary. Grain can be highly damaging to a ruminant’s stomach over time, but it makes them fat much more quickly than their natural grass diet, and thus producers usually choose profit over the well being of the animals. Both these boys vie for the attention of guests, and it wouldn’t be surprising to turn and have a wooly face or leg bumping you and asking for scratches. Abbott particularly loves attention, and will spend most of his time running to the side of any human who has an available hand to offer him scratches.

Clementine

Clementine

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Turkey escapes before Thanksgiving are not uncommon, and are cause for joy in the sanctuary world. Clementine was found wandering the streets in Utah before Thanksgiving in 2011, and was so personable and friendly toward the couple who found him that they assumed he was a beloved pet; however no human companions came forth in their search. Thus Clementine was welcomed to Ching, and he continues to be one of the friendliest of turkey toms, normally a territorial bunch, but Clementine loves human friends and even new visitors, greeting them with his impressive display of vibrant feathers.

Nandi

Nandi

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Rescued after watching his entire family killed before his eyes by a mobile slaughter truck, Nandi still bears some distrust toward humans.  This massive horned steer is very protective of his sanctuary mates – when a sanctuary resident dies Nandi often chases the truck that comes to take their body.  It is clear that Nandi remembers from where he was saved, and his response speaks to not only his self-awareness, but his awareness and concern for all the residents.

Apollo

Apollo

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Turkeys that appear in shelters prior to Thanksgiving are at high risk for being “adopted” and slaughtered. Luckily Apollo was quickly pulled by a rescuer before someone got the idea he would make a good holiday dinner. Once safely at Ching, Apollo proved to be quite the show off, performing the turkey mating dance and territory displays constantly, perhaps proud of his unique light coloring on his feathers. Sadly like many turkeys bred for the size of their breasts, Apollo suffered from heart issues that took his life before he was likely even a year old.

Harry Bob

Harry Bob

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Harry Bob was one of several Bobs rescued from a research lab at a Utah university. His breed, the Yucatan Blacks, are often experimented on and their organs used for organ transplantation, with little regard for the incredibly intelligent individual being subject to the experiments or organ harvest. At sanctuary, Harry Bob and his other Bob cohorts inspect the grounds for treats and stick their snouts in everyone’s business, keeping tabs on the sanctuary happenings.

Burt

Burt

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Burt spent part of his life as a breeding stud, valued for the amount of miniature donkey offspring he could sire and ultimately how much profit they could bring. When he had outlived this function for the breeder, he was adopted by Ching a few years after the sanctuary was founded, and he has been with them ever since, valued because he is an individual, not for what he can produce. A rather friendly and inquisitive member of the small hoofed herd, Burt has become one of the faces of the sanctuary, greeting guests and volunteers.

Daphne

Daphne

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

One of two turkey girls rescued from a factory farm, Daphne survived to experience a few short yet happy months free at Ching. Though her body showed all the signs of a turkey bred for her flesh in industrial animal agriculture, her spirit was as unique and joyous as any human spirit. Daphne’s curiosity and friendliness defied the horrible place she spent her childhood, and she found love and kindness for what would be her teen years at the sanctuary before a reproductive issue took her life.

Goat

Goat

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Goat the sheep was raised as part of a 4-H project. The 4-H program is supposed to teach kids how to care for non-human animals, yet built into the system is the need to become uncaring and emotionally detached from their companion, knowing they will die at the end.  Some human kids do not resist their natural empathy however, and Goat was fortunate that his human companion chose to find him a loving home at Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary where he is celebrated as an individual and a quirky member of the sheep flock.

Laverne

Laverne

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Laverne was found with her sister Shirley in a box, taped up and without any air holes, on the side of a Utah freeway in December. The piglets were about 4 days old, and near death when a woman saw the box move, stopped, and brought them home.  Living in a non-agricultural neighborhood, she could not keep them, so brought them to sanctuary.  There they were carefully nursed back to health, the parasites and grime removed, allowing them to flourish and be the joyous and gregarious pigs they should be.

Lincoln

Lincoln

Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, Herriman, Utah

Found on a county shelter website right before Thanksgiving, Lincoln was quickly pulled by a rescuer to avoid someone getting the idea he would make a good holiday dinner. That may have been his original fate, as some people think buying their own turkey to raise and slaughter for Thanksgiving will give some special meaning to the meal, however now Lincoln can celebrate life each Thanksgiving. Lincoln protects a flock of rescued egg laying hens, and while he seems a bit gruff, he actually likes human attention.

Ching Sanctuary intervened, and now shy Parvati safely watches over the Utah sanctuary’s grounds with her partner Nandi. Parvati likes to find the tallest parts of the sanctuary from which to observe her surroundings and keep tabs on comings and goings, making sure all is well in the land.

Sven

Sven

Raised in a center for troubled youth, Sven was viewed as nothing more than a project to teach the youth rather than the terrified youngster missing his mother that he was. Perhaps it was this that bonded the kids at the center with Sven, but they would not let him be sent to slaughter at the completion of the program, and instead Ching was able to offer him a home. At Ching, Sven found cattle and doting human family, but soon got a best buddy in Grimm, rescued from a similar facility. Together the two boys run amok around the sanctuary.
