Cecil & Miss Hattie

Cecil & Miss Hattie

Farm Sanctuary, Orland, California

Cecil and Miss Hattie were both part of a group of 114 goats pulled from a hoarder in North Eastern San Diego county. When they arrived at the sanctuary, like most of their herd, these two were very skittish and distrustful of humans. Cecil maintains a cautious distance from humans still, and Miss Hattie, who suffered from a leg condition left untreated before arriving at Farm Sanctuary that made her walk mostly on her front knees, has started to slowly come around thanks to lots of medicated treats. Luckily the medications Miss Hattie has been provided have enabled her to lead a much more normal life.

Butterworth

Butterworth

Farm Sanctuary, Orland, California

One of twelve sheep rescued from a Los Angeles area backyard butcher, Butterworth and the other ewes were in terrible shape - emaciated and suffering from respiratory illness, barely surviving on scraps, and likely continually impregnated to sell their children for lamb meat. Arriving at Farm Sanctuary, these elderly girls' world transformed to one of medical care, plentiful food, warm barns, and humans who wanted nothing from them except for them to be at peace. Butterworth and her friends' situation is not unique: small scale farms face stiff competition and often cut every corner for profits, denying the individuality of the animals they harm.

Albert

Albert

Farm Sanctuary, Orland, California

Albert was an escape artist. His previous caretaker could not keep the gregarious and inquisitive donkey from venturing beyond his home, and neighbors complained, including one person who threatened to shoot the donkey should he escape again. Albert’s caretaker thankfully did right by him and found him an appropriate home with Farm Sanctuary. Albert first met the sanctuary sheep flock, and with a much larger area to explore, his escape artist tendencies did not reappear. Later he became best friends with Waylon, a donkey who had just lost his longtime partner. As a friendly mini donkey, Albert has a tendency to steal the hearts of all the humans who are fortunate to meet him.

Ricky

Ricky

Farm Sanctuary, Orland, California

Ricky is one of 114 goats pulled from a hoarder in North Eastern San Diego county. When he arrived at the sanctuary, he, along with his departed buddy Fred, was one of the friendliest of an otherwise very frightened herd. Ricky was never quite as much the center of attention as Fred, who was rather pushy, he is however more patient with his desire for attention, and the human stragglers of a group often get to see his affectionate nature.

Auntie Mame

Farm Sanctuary, Orland, California

One of twelve sheep rescued from a Los Angeles area backyard butcher, Auntie Mame and the other ewes were in terrible shape - emaciated and suffering from respiratory illness, barely surviving on scraps, and likely continually impregnated to sell their children for lamb meat. Auntie Mame in fact gave birth after animal control seized the group, however her lamb was stillborn. Shortly after, one of the other ewes gave birth and accepted Auntie Mame as a second mother to her newborn. Auntie Mame nurtured little Cassie Jo alongside Edith, and at Farm Sanctuary was able to thrive, love, and be loved as the outgoing and dignified lady she is.

Peanut

Peanut

Farm Sanctuary, Orland, California

Peanut was rescued from a stockyard where he was one of three calves that failed to sell at auction.  The calves likely would have been dumped on the dead pile to slowly starve to death if not for an investigator present that day.  Peanut was the outgoing calf, whereas his rescue brother Cocoa was painfully shy.  As he has aged Peanut has shown himself to be rambunctious and a bit aggressive with his play.  Luckily his herd family knocks sense in to him when necessary.
